The Begining

Oh man, where to begin!?! I guess I'll just start with the basics!

On Saturday the 11 we landed in Montego Bay. We stayed in Top Hill down on the south shore and we worked in Bull Savannah a little ways away.

We stayed with Peter and Mitsy who are friends with a few of my instructors and they have been hosting students for years

It's kind of hard to see in this picture but Peter has a long tuft of hair on the side of his head that sticks straight up. At first I really didn't know what to think about it. But it's because both of his parents were deaf and at the end of his mother's life she also started to loose her sight. The only way she knew who Peter was was by feeling his tuft of hair. Even after she passed away he kept the hair the way it was. 

This apartment they built behind their house for students to stay in. It's not a great picture but you kind of get the idea. We were able to do laundry after the first week and we did hang it on the line in front of the apartment. We put it in the washing machine, then took it out half way through to rinse it by hand in a bucket to save water, then put it back in the washer to spin before hanging it on the line.

This is the clinic where we worked. There was also a pharmacy that was open two days per week and a doctors office in the same building. The doctor was only there on Thursdays and he started seeing patients around 9 am. When we got there at 8 people were already waiting for him.  Some people get there at like 4 in the morning to wait in line to see him. And when we left at 4 there were still tons of people there waiting to see him, people who had been there all day. 

They drive reverse of us there, the driver side is on the right and they drive on the left side of the road. It took a bit to get used to but it didn't seem that strange after a while! 

People there drive really fast, if it weren't for the potholes in the road that slow people down, it would be a really scary place to drive! People there also use their horns a lot. But they dont use them there like they do in Philly. There are a couple different honks that they use. There's a "Hey friend!" honk, a "I'm coming around a blind turn" honk, a "I'm about to pass you" honk, and my favorite was the "high five! We just passed each other successfully without falling off the cliff!" honk.
