Two weekends ago I finished my second half marathon! It was kind of a last minute decision to register for it so I didn't train as well for this as I had for my last one. And this one had a couple of pretty serious hills so I was pretty sure it was going to take me longer this time. But I was feeling so good through the whole thing. I kept thinking to myself "I still have a long ways to go, maybe I should slow down a little." But I also did not want to get to the end and feel like I could keep going. So I kept picking up the pace a little and I still felt great! This one was at Mesa Falls and it was the most beautiful day! Perfect temperature, no wind and overcast. It went through the warm river camp ground where my ward went for girls camp 3 or 4 times. As I ran through the camp ground, tons of memories came flooding back!
It was the best of times :)
I really gave it everything I had and ended up finishing a full 3 minutes faster than my last half marathon! As soon as I crossed the finish line and stopped running, it hit me full force. My legs, hips and back were screaming in pain and I was completely spent. I definitely could not have gone any further.
I've read that you should not sprint to the finish line. By the time you've run 13 miles, your muscles are fatigued and sprinting is how injuries happen. But when I round the corner and the I can finally see the finish line, I cannot help myself! I get a huge burst of adrenaline and I can't stop myself from sprinting!
After a couple of minutes I started feeling lightheaded and getting shaky. I started to get a little worried that I might pass out or something, but I ate something and had some milk and felt much better. Not that completely depleting my blood sugar was a good idea or that I will try to do that again, but it did feel really good to know that I had really given it everything I had.
I was so lucky to have Holly and Landon make the trip up from Rexburg to support me! It's always so great to have friends cheering at the finish line. And of course my mom as always. She's my biggest fan :)
